An Adventure to Ruby Falls

On a recent drive back from Nashville, TN, I couldn't help but notice the numerous signs advertising Ruby Falls. As each sign passed by, my imagination painted a vivid picture of an Alice in Wonderland-esque setting—bright sunshine illuminating a waterfall, surrounded by vibrant flowers and fluttering butterflies.

The Spontaneous Decision

After about the third advertisement, coupled with the need get out of the car to stretch my legs, I couldn't contain my curiosity any longer. "Let's go check out Ruby Falls!" I blurted out. As we drove up the hilly road, searching for a parking spot, my whimsical daydream persisted.

The Unexpected Twist

Once parked, we got out, stretched a bit, and made our way into the building. The gift shop caught our eye first, and then we found where to purchase tickets for the waterfall tour. I was prepared for the ticket price and the walk, but what came next was a surprise to me anyway. The attendant directed us to stand by the elevator.  I looked at my husband and whispered why an elevator? He just smiled and I'm sure was chuckling inside because he knew that it was an underground cavern.

The Descent into the Caverns

We entered the elevator. The automated voice of the elevator explained that we would be descending 260 feet to explore underground caverns. Wait! This wasn't part of my vision. Did I mention that I'm a bit claustrophobic and dislike being cold? At this point, none of that mattered—the adventure had begun.

Exploring Lookout Mountain

We were deep inside historic Lookout Mountain, about to witness the tallest underground cave waterfall. Walking the cavern trail to the thundering waterfall, we joined a group of about 20 people of all ages. As we navigated narrow passages and moved aside for passing tours, the temperature dropped, adding a cool thrill to the adventure.

The Thundering Waterfall

Along the way, we learned about the fascinating history of Ruby Falls while exploring the cavern trail. Finally, we reached the thundering waterfall. Though it wasn't the whimsical wonderland I had imagined, it was a breathtaking sight and an incredible learning experience.

The adventure concluded, and as we emerged back into the daylight, I couldn't help but chuckle. Next time, maybe I'll read up more on the adventure before jumping in. As Disney's Mad Hatter might say, "If you don't know where you want to go, then it doesn't matter which path you take!"
