When my wife and I were dating, one of our most memorable outings was a fishing trip below the dam at Water Port, New York. It was springtime, and the Rockbass were running up Oak Orchard Creek. The weather was perfect, and the excitement of a fishing adventure added to the charm of the day.
Catching the Big Ones
We started directly below the dam and made our way downstream toward the archery club. The Rockbass were biting, and we managed to catch some impressive ones, including a large female smallmouth bass. Each catch added to the thrill of the day, and the shared experience brought us closer together.
A Warning Ignored
As we approached a deep hole in front of a tree at the archery club, I warned my girlfriend, who was wearing a pair of chest waders, to be careful. The water was much deeper there, and I didn’t want any mishaps. However, the unexpected happened. I suddenly heard a big splash and some commotion behind me.
An Unforgettable Splash
I turned around to see her floating down the creek, her waders filling with water. Nearby, another fisherman glanced over and nonchalantly asked if she could swim. When she responded affirmatively, he simply went back to casting, unconcerned. The sight of her drifting along while trying to regain her footing was both hilarious and heartwarming.
Laughter and Recovery
I couldn’t help but laugh as I rushed downstream to help her. The situation, though potentially alarming, turned into a lighthearted moment that we both cherish to this day. After the initial shock and laughter, we continued fishing our way back to the dam.
Drying Out and Wrapping Up
The day ended with us sitting on the rocks, drying out in the warm spring sun. It was a perfect ending to an unforgettable adventure. That day, filled with laughter, unexpected splashes, and successful catches, remains one of our favorite fishing memories.
