Grouse Ridge Creek

No, that’s not a place. It’s an English setter I bought from Grouse Ridge Kennels. Creek was a strong-willed dog that loved pointing birds. Creek was white with black spots except for his head which was mostly black and tan. Creek had a beautiful long coat and a majestic tail that he held high while pointing a bird.

Creek's Hunting Adventures

I hunted woodcock and grouse over him mostly, but occasionally we would get to hunt pheasants. One year I decided that I wanted to have a game farm where I could hunt pheasant and quail and have other people come to enjoy hunting too. It was a lot of work building the pens and raising the birds. When you would see Creek working birds in the fields, it was worth every drop of sweat.

The Magic of Watching Creek

I guided hundreds of people with Creek, and that dog loved doing his job. To watch him cross back and forth testing the wind in a field to zero in on a bird was magical. Creek would hold his nose into the air and slip through the forest or field until he would catch a scent. Slowing and becoming more deliberate with every step, he would ease closer to the hidden bird until he dared not take one more step or the bird would flush.

Creek's Hunting Technique

His intensity and desire to show me where the birds were hiding always amazed me. Sometimes his bell would stop ringing, and it would take me a long time to find him in the thick cover, but he would hold his point until I did and flushed the bird. Hunting over a good dog is like having the cheat codes on a hard test.

Creek's dedication and skills made every hunting trip unforgettable. His legacy as a remarkable hunting dog lives on in every story told about his incredible feats.
