One year, we decided to go to Nashville, Tennessee, for our family vacation. We stayed in downtown Nashville for a few days, where we took in the sights and visited the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry twice. We had a great time and saw some awesome performers. My youngest daughter even recorded a song in one of the studios. It was a fun time. However, the best part of the trip turned out to be the time we spent at a house we rented out in the country.
Discovering the Country Charm
The wooden house we rented was beautiful, with a nice view and all the amenities. Our host had a large farm that we were given permission to turkey hunt on. My daughter and son, young hunters, enjoyed chasing turkeys with their dad. The landowner was gracious enough to take us around the property in his truck to get us familiar with the land. He gave us a few pointers, and we shared some laughs together before calling it a night.
Morning Hunt Adventures
In the morning, we woke up early for breakfast and coffee before heading out in the darkness to a hidden field blind. We had been warned that this was a working cattle ranch and should step accordingly if you know what I mean. As we quietly made our way into the blind, my daughter made a disgusted groaning sound. During the night, a cow had backed up to the doorway of the blind and left a pile of fertilizer inside the door. Guess who kneeled right in it.
After some laughter and grumbling, we got settled in for the wait for daybreak. My young son was very tired and was leaning on his sister to catch a few more winks. Suddenly, I heard uncontrollable laughter under my daughter's breath. I asked her what was so funny. She could only point at her brother, who was sound asleep with his head resting on her knee. I looked at him and then her with a confused expression. Finally, she was able to laugh out the word "poop!"
A Hilarious Close Encounter
The next morning, we set up under a large bush all together. It was a perfect natural blind. My son sat on my left, and my daughter sat on my right. We had been sitting for about an hour when a big old cow came ambling around the bend. She would pass by within touching distance, and because my daughter was facing the other direction, she could not see the cow. My son and I knew it was going to scare the crap out of his sister, and he was laughing hysterically while trying to be quiet at the same time.
The cow was drooling and slowly walking towards her and would soon come into her peripheral vision at a very close proximity of one or two feet. The suspense was intensely funny while we waited for her reaction. Finally, she saw the big cow and recoiled from surprise, spitting out a few "holy craps" and "omg's."
An Afternoon of Laughter
Afternoon found us out on a ridge calling to a bird with tight lip disease. We had put my son ten yards in front of us to be the shooter if the gobbler showed up. As we sat waiting, I caught movement off to my son's left. It was a calf who was very curious and was apparently looking for a turkey friend. My son was sitting on the trail that the calf was on, and it would soon be upon him. Now it was my daughter's turn to laugh as the curious calf got closer and closer to her brother.
Laughter is so contagious, and we were now both dying. Finally, the calf broke a twig just in time because he would have had to step over my son to continue down the trail. I'm not sure who was more surprised at the encounter, but it was elbows, hooves, and legs going in all different directions. It was as if time had slowed down and then all at once went into fast forward.
I have been on many hunts in my life with a lot of good times, but I have never laughed as much as I did on that special trip to Nashville!
