Rainy Day Turkey Hunting

If you hunt spring turkeys, it’s inevitable—you’ll get rained on. Even though turkeys experience rain throughout their lives, it doesn’t mean they like it.

How Rain Affects Turkey Behavior

When it’s raining at first light, turkeys tend to fly down later than usual and move cautiously. Gobbling from the roost is significantly reduced; sometimes, they only gobble after flying down, and sometimes not at all.

Patience is Key on Rainy Days

If you roost a bird and he doesn’t gobble due to rain, be patient. Wait until it’s fully light before making a few soft calls to let him know you’re there. Most rainy-day birds approach quietly, so always stay ready.

Some turkeys remain on the roost as late as 9:30 AM but will still visit the location where they heard calls at dawn. If they fly down before the rain starts, hunt them as you normally would.

How Fog Impacts Your Hunt

Fog can be a waiting game, particularly in mountainous areas where it rises from the valley, pausing the hunt until it lifts.

One memorable experience in Virginia involved calling in two gobbling birds for clients. They were within a hundred yards when thick fog rolled in, silencing them instantly. As soon as the fog cleared, the turkeys resumed gobbling and ended up in the truck.

Why Turkeys Go Silent

If a gobbler suddenly stops making noise, it may not be because of you. Predators like coyotes and bobcats can cause birds to go quiet. However, it could also mean the turkey is already on its way to your location.

If a predator spooks a bird, it may take 30 minutes or longer before the turkey starts calling again. Avoid rushing to move on—give him time to settle and respond.

Smart Tactics for Moving Locations

When deciding to move, avoid heading directly to where the turkey was last heard. Doing so increases the chance of spooking him.

Just like people, turkeys adjust their behavior based on weather conditions. Modify your tactics accordingly, and you’ll increase your chances of success.

Essential Gear for Rainy-Day Turkey Hunts
