The Art of Archery Hunting: Tips, Techniques, and the Thrill of the Hunt

Archery hunting is so much more than learning how to use a bow and arrows. Hunting with any weapon takes a certain amount of skill to be able to consistently take wild game. When you make the switch from hunting with a gun to a bow, the difficulty level is multiplied exponentially.

Understanding Your Quarry

If you hunt with a bow, you have to get within your accuracy range to even think about shooting. That means knowing the game you are after and its habitat intimately, along with its food sources, bedding areas, and travel areas. You have to learn how to blend into the environment so well that you can get within twenty yards or closer to make an ethical shot.

The Stealth Factor

Now you have to avoid being seen, so you can only move when the quarry's eyesight is blocked. You have to draw back the string, move your bow into position, and carefully aim while maintaining your composure. The wind direction is crucial because even the slightest whiff of human scent at that close proximity will send your game running for the hills.

Developing Ninja-like Skills

You pretty much have to learn ninja skills to become a good archery hunter. You also have to learn the anatomy of your game animal so your shot will cut through a vital organ for a quick, clean, ethical harvest. You have to practice shooting at odd angles so your arrow placement is correct.

Reading Body Language

Many animals will have some sort of recoiling reaction to the sound of your arrow being released. You have to know when to compensate for a deer that is alert. So now you have to be able to read the body language of your game. Adrenaline is going to be rushing through your body because of the close proximity of the game. If you forget to breathe and focus on a shot opportunity, the chance of making a good shot is very low.

Overcoming Obstacles

Obstacles are another thing to keep in mind. If a limb is between you and your target, you have to know if the trajectory of your arrow will clear it or be deflected. All of the things that make archery hunting so difficult are the same reason it is so rewarding. The heart-pounding, knee-knocking, nerve-wracking, intense buildup of anticipation, and the dreadful heart-breaking devastation you feel over and over! That’s bow hunting!

The Reward of a Successful Hunt

The successful hunt is just as exhilarating and has a special place in your heart that you will never forget. Not many things in life can make you feel as alive as you feel when you’re watching your arrow flying through the air and the mule kick of a heart-shot buck.
