Tricking Early Season Bucks

I know most of us are chomping at the bit to climb into our tree stands this fall to wait for a buck to walk past. That is a good strategy most of the time, but I like to mix things up a bit. With acorns starting to drop and testosterone levels rising, bucks are getting more aggressive and susceptible to calling.

Soft Grunts and Antler Raking

I’m not talking about snort wheezing, antler rattling, or loud grunting sequences. I like to do some sneaking along thickets and bedding areas where I can make some very soft grunts accompanied by some antler raking on branches and saplings. I might do a mock scrape in the leaves for added effects. Check out this Illusion Systems Black Rack - Rattling Deer Antlers with Instructional Video

Early Season Strategy

Nothing loud or aggressive in the early season as the bucks are more curious about what buck is in their area than an actual fight. You have to be listening for the slightest sound of antlers tickling branches or soft footsteps in the leaves. You have to have some cover to be able to draw without being busted but not too covered up that you can’t shoot. Don’t forget about being on the downwind side of the cover you think a deer might come from.

Scouting New Areas

I like to use these tactics when I scout a new area for sign. If I find a good thicket with some rubs on the edge, I will make a few setups along the way through the area. The art of it is being subtle, like a buck that is just messing around. Find the perfect trail camera for scouting.

Disappearing Bucks Before the Rut

This is also a good technique during that time period when bucks seem to disappear before the rut starts. It works for me on those days when I am sick of sitting in my stand. My favorite time for this type of hunt is early morning to midday. Sometimes I use this type of calling on the way to my tree stand or just before climbing in my stand. Bucks don’t usually rush in early season, instead, they slowly come in looking for the intruder. Check out these early season calls.

Hope this gets a few of you a chance at a good buck.
